Lot Details
LITERATURE – SHORT STORIES OF HUXLEY, HARTLEY and FORSTER
Extra-illustrated first American edition of Georgian Stories for 1925, with a letter pasted in by each author to G.H. Grubb of the publisher's Putnam, acknowledging receipt (or otherwise) of complimentary copies, including E.M. Forster [contributor of 'The Story of the Siren'] ("...how very nicely they are got up..."), Aldous Huxley ['Little Mexican'] ("...I have just got back from a voyage round the world... the copy of Georgian Stories which you were kind enough to send me must have gone astray – it may be still pursuing me from port to port of the Far East in a desperate attempt to catch me..."), L.P. Hartley ['The Island']("...every way superior to the English Version. I leave it about in every place. My novel makes a little headway & I hope to get on faster when the oppression of the pages still to be written diminishes..."), Osbert Sitwell, Richard Hughes, Michael Arlen, Naomi Mitchison ("...it has a serious outside which ought to make one feel that it isn't quite like buying a frivolous novel!..."), Martin Armstrong, C.E. Montague, Arnold Palmer, Frank Penn Smith, J.C. Squire, F. Tennyson Jesse, Horace Annesley Vachel and Hugh Kingsmill ['W.J.'] ("...as good a collection as one could expect. Possibly my signature may lead you to think the editor guilty of family partiality..."), publisher's half cloth, upper joint weak, some marking and light wear, contemporary buckram slip case, 8vo, G.P. Putnam's Sons, New York & London, the Knickerbocker Press, 1925

Footnotes

  • The London edition had been published by Chapman & Hall, the editor being Hugh Kingsmill's brother, Arnold Lunn. Putnam's edition, which does not credit Lunn, is supplemented by a portrait of each author. Forster's 'Story of the Siren' had originally been published by the Hogarth Press in 1920; while Huxley's 'Little Mexican' was to be the title story of his third collection which appeared in 1929.
