Footnotes

  • Wonderfully evocative album of 101 fully realised watercolours of London theatre performances - including Romberg & Hammerstein's "The Desert Song". They are the work of Anthony Caton-Woodville (born 1878) who was a jobbing actor (2 of the scenes depict him as an understudy, one manacled in chains captioned "Outcasts" next to a letter from the management of the London Playhouse demanding that understudies do "not use the corridor more than is necessary"). The son of celebrated battle scene artist Richard Caton-Woodville (who left his son £10 on his death by suicide in 1927), Anthony appears on this evidence to have been an accomplished caricaturist. The series includes a sequence of 41 images relating to the first London performance of "The Desert Song" by Sigmund Romberg and Oscar Hammerstein II (1927), an enormously successful musical inspired by Lawrence of Arabia, and events in French colonial Africa. Also scenes from "The Apple Cart" by George Bernard Shaw (1928), "Barretts of Wimpole Street" by Robert Besier (1930), and "Mary Goes First" (1913) by Henry Arthur Jones, who is depicted in discussion with Shakespeare.
