  • A report based on the journals and papers written by members of the naval expedition, led to Perry, to induce the Japanese Government to enter into diplomatic relations with the United States, which "contributed to the collapse of the feudal regime and to the subsequent modernization of Japan" (Hill). In addition to an outline on the negotiations, it includes a narrative of the voyage, with two chapters devoted to China and Hong Kong, reports on natural history (with coloured ornithological plates) and volume 3 devoted to "Observations on the Zodiacal Light... with Conclusions from the data".
