John Young Hunter was born in Glasgow, the son of the Scottish artist Colin Hunter. He trained at R.A schools, London, under Sargent and Orchardson. He lived in Giffords Hall, Suffolk, and emigrated the USA in 1913, where lived and worked in New Mexico. Many of his American paintings depicted the native indians' way of life.
