    Henry 'Gillie' Gilbert was the founder of the Wills Lane Gallery, architect and veteran of the St. Ives art scene. He was a crucial advocate in the career development of many of the now renowned moderns from the period including Barbara Hepworth, Ben Nicholson and Bernard Leach. In later life he was a key component in the establishment of the town's artistic legacy as part of the St Ives Action Group which raised substantial funds for the building of Tate St. Ives.
