Wilson Taylor, in remembrance of the summer of 1911, from Edward P", in a fitted red leather case embellished in gold with the Prince of Wales feathers, length 10cm, weight total 4.5oz.

Footnotes

  • Edward VIII (Edward Albert Christian George Andrew Patrick David; later The Prince Edward, Duke of Windsor; 1894-1972) was crowned King of Great Britain, Ireland and the British Dominions beyond the Seas on the 20th January 1936. His reign of just 326 days was ended on the 11th December later that year following his abdication from the throne in order to pursue his marriage to the American twice-divorcee, Wallis Simpson.

Following his abdication he became the Duke of Windsor with the pair marrying in June 1937 after Simpson's second divorce became final. After a spell serving with the British military mission to France and a role as the governor of The Bahamas, the pair retired to France where they lived out the remainder of their lives together.

This cigarette case appears to have been awarded by Edward shortly after his investiture as the Prince of Wales at Caernarvon Castle in July 1911. The inscription to the reverse notes the "remembrance of the summer of 1911". It is therefore possible that the case was given to one of the guests of the investiture in what was known to have been a rather fanciful and illustrious ceremony.
