A Victorian silver 'City of Wakefield' presentation casket
by Frederick Elkington, Birmingham 1888
Rectangular form, the hinged curving dome cover chased with panels of foliate sprays, two blue enamelled shield reserves, surmounted with a castellated crown, one engraved with a fleur d'lys, the other side with script initials HL, flanked by scrolling ribbons engraved "CITY OF WAKEFIELD 1888", unmarked cast silver finial modelled as a standing figure of a cherub, the body with relief panels, the sides depicting Aquarius pouring water from a vessel, among rolling waves, the opposite side depicting Pisces, Venus and Cupid among rolling clouds, each panel flanked by leaves and bullrushes, the side panels each depicting three cherubs among parted grasses, lobed borders, the upper and lower corners with protruding roundels, the lower corners each with a seated cherub, the top corner forming a canopy, with flower finial, on disc feet, length 32cm.
