Footnotes

  • Provenance: from the collection of Sir William Empson and Hetta, Lady Empson. Sir William (1906-1984) was a literary critic and poet who taught at Peking University and in Kunming in the 1930s, and the family were again in China from 1948 to 1953. The painting was acquired in China during these periods and thence passed by descent.

The present lot appears to have been included in a travelling exhibition of the works of Qi Baishi around the UK in 1956. Hetta, Lady Empson, is here shown in a photograph from the Reading Chronicle in 1956, wearing Chinese-style dress and accompanying visiting Chinese dignitaries around the exhibition. Fluent in Mandarin and a member of the Communist Party at the time, Lady Empson was considered a reliable interpreter for the occasion.
