FIRST EDITION. Verbiest was an important Jesuit missionary to China, at one point serving the Emperor as his instructor of astronomy. The final fourth of the book concerns the first Jesuit colonization of "the island" of California with Father Kino. "It is a translation of the Relacion Puntual of Isidro de Atondo giving an account of his expedition to Lower California in 1683 where formal possession for Spain was taken near the Bay of La Paz on April 1, 1683" (Streeter sale 2420).
