PLANCIUS' FIRST WORLD MAP, Shirley's state 3. Plancius was the first cartographer of the Dutch East India Company, as well as a minister for the Dutch Reformed Church. Done after Mercator's world map of 1587, it introduces a number of improvements, including a reshaped South America, refinements to the west coasts of America and Asia, the addition of the Solomon Isles, and for the first time, the depiction of Japan as three large and one small island.
