PROVENANCE
Michael Hamson, Palos Verdes, California
Private Collection, California

According to Hamson, "This is a classic style of drum found on the Schouten Islands that lie off New Guinea's north coast to the west of the mouth of the Sepik River. The hourglass form is covered in carved motifs and the handle has recumbent ancestral figures on each end. The figures are beautiful with large heads, hands to knees posture and have German-era porcelain trade rings attached. Notice that the figures are secured to the handle of the drum with tightly wound fishing line—the handle is the most vulnerable part of the drum and I think this was done long, long ago when one side showed a crack. Now the handle, and the entire drum, is extremely tight and stable. The piece dates to the pre-1920 era." (MichaelHamson/Archives, WEB, nd)
