Fine Maori Cloak Pin, New Zealand
length 5in (12.7cm)
Private Collection, Hawaii
Aurei or 'cloak pins' were used to fasten Maori cloaks over the shoulder. Made from various materials, including marine mammal ivory, and later boar tusks, they were often embellished with fine carving and tied in bunches clustered together.
The present example, most likely excavated, is intricately carved in the form of a bird and shows significant age and wear to the surface.
