PROVENANCE
Lessing J. Rosenwald, Jenkington, Pennsylvania
Thence by descent
Private Collection, Pennsylvania
Acquired from the above by the present owner

Rosenwald (1891-1979) was a well-known businessman, a scholar on Paul Gauguin, and a collector of rare books and art.
A finely hand carved and exceptional example, cut from the sapwood center of the tree giving it a handsome "marble" effect, the solid rounded base finely tapers upwards into very thin and elegant walls with numerous indigenous repairs including a small butterfly (pewa) repair near the rim; varied light and dark brown honey patina.
