In her article Late Nineteenth Century Marquesan Clubs: A Preliminary Analysis, The Journal of Pacific Arts Association, No. 11 & 12, July 1995, Carol Ivory compares and contrasts at least four distinct style groups with a fifth Miscellaneous category.
According to Ivory (personal communication, December 2013), the present work falls into the 'Style 3' category due to the following attributes: rounded pegs for 'eyes' rather than anthropomorphic heads; shallow surface carving on the face; back-to-back tiki figures on the handle below the crossbar; the bottom ends carved (ibid.).
