PROVENANCE
Private Collection, California

'According to early visitors, men and women in the Marquesas typically wore few ornaments in their daily lives. Women might wear flowers in the ears, or men, "iron nails, a little wooden stick...and various other trifles." But for special occasions, such as feasts and ceremonies, individuals dressed in all their finery and adorned themselves with ear ornaments of a variety of types, some large and imposing, others small and finely carved.'
