Very Fine Bilateral Toothed Club, Samoan Islands
height 43 1/8in (109.6cm)
Jean Yves Coue, Nantes, France
James Barzyk, Chicago, Illinois
Cf. Phelps (1976: fig. 679)
A similar club (Phelps, 1976:679), "belongs to the fa'alaufa'i class, with many pairs of lateral projections and a pointed head for a thrusting blow. Buck notes that this form also has an arboreal origin, its shape corresponding to the leaf of the banana tree (1930:596). The English name for this type is 'bilateral toothed' club. These two weapons [like the work presented here] are extremely finely finished and well sculpted, their beauty as much tactile as visual."
