Footnotes

  • Laurence Adolph Steinhardt, born in New York City in 1892, served as a sergeant in the U.S. Amy during World War I. Afterwards he practiced law in the firm of his uncle, Samuel Untermyer, father of Irwin Untermyer, the Supreme Court Justice and renown collector of European decorative art.

    Steinhardt successfully campaigned for Franklin Roosevelt in 1932, and the following year the newly elected president appointed him U.S. Minister to Sweden. He further served as Ambassador to Peru from 1937 to 1939, to the Soviet Union from 1939 to 1941, and to Turkey in 1942. During his Turkish tenure Steinhardt helped to rescue Hungarian Jews from Nazi Bergen Belsen concentration camp. Laurence Steinhardt died in a plane crash while serving as Ambassador to Canada in 1950. He is buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
