Footnotes

  • George Fisher was born in Springfield VT in 1820 and likely earned his trade in the shop of his father, Jacob Fisher, who worked in Woodstock. He formed a partnership with his brother, Isaac, between 1841 until about 1850. He is listed as a cabinetmaker in both the 1850 and 1860 Federal census but is additionally listed as a chairmaker in the 1856 New England Business Directory. A classical card table, also bearing his label, is in the collection of the Woodstock Historical Society and illustrated in Kenneth Joel Zogry, The Best the Country Affords: Vermont Furniture 1765-1850, (Bennington, 1995), p. 130, cat. no. 80. For additional information on Fisher, see Charles A. Robinson, Vermont Cabinetmakers & Chairmakers Before 1855: A Checklist, (Shelburne, 1994), p. 53.
