Footnotes

  • This brooch is a perfect example of the adaptation of modernism in Barcelonese jewellery at the beginning of the 20th century. Founded in 1766, Carreras is one of the oldest Spanish goldsmiths and jewellery makers. Producing in the first instance outstanding and traditional jewellery, at the turn of the 20th century, they applied the principles of Art Nouveau, paralleling the innovations of jewellers Lalique in France and Masriera. In 1915, the company merged with Masriera to become Masriera i Carreras. Nowadays they are known as Baguès-Masriera, following their second merger with the jewellery company Baguès. This brooch, with its delicate polychrome plique-à-jour enamel and fine goldwork, is a rare example of Carrera's Art Nouveau creations, before its merger with Masriera.
