A steering stanchion from the yacht Fanita
American, circa 1896
mahogany, with a pair of carved dolphins supporting a center post, relief carved with foliate and scallop shell decoration, a German silver center-cap, on either side are spring loaded fastening pins, mounted on a mahogany base with fastening holes angled to accommodate the deck camber of the yacht. Along with a sterling silver commemorative pitcher, of typical form with a beaded top edge and handle, the inscription reads "Fanita/to/Comm. J. B. Simpson/from his friends/Warner Miller - W.A. Halsey/Theodore Sutro - John W. Herbert/Chas. L. Wilbur - Mitchell Scott/Perrin Langdon - Wm. H. White/July 1896."
