Watercolour on ivory, the reverse signed and dated Hargreaves - Liverpool/ Novr. 1807, gold frame with pierced suspension loop, the reverse engraved Mary/ wife of B Gaskell Esq.r/ mar. 17 June 1807/ died 23 Nov.r 1845/ T. Hargreaves, 1807, fitted brown leather travelling case of rectangular format with easel attachment to the base.

Please also note, some information regarding the sitter's biography has been brought to our attention by a descendant of the sitter: Mrs Mary Gaskell was the daughter of Dr Joseph Brandreth of Broadgreen Hall in Liverpool and she married Benjamin Gaskell MP (1781-1856) of Clifton Hall near Manchester, who sat for Maldon between 1806-1807 and 1812-1826.
