Footnotes

  • The black dress and veil worn by Anne would suggest the present lot post-dates her husband's death in 1643. A circular version of the present miniature attributed to Petitot's School is held by the Royal Collection (see G. Reynolds, The Sixteenth and Seventeenth-Century Miniatures in the Collection of Her Majesty the Queen, 1999, p.238, ill.no.300). Other oval versions fully attributed to Petitot have sold at Christie's, London on 14 October 1998 (lot 122) and 20 March 1990 (lot 80).

It is possible that the present lot, engraved WM. IV was once owned or gifted by William IV since his brother, George IV was an avid collector of Petitot's work and acquired over fifty of the artist's miniatures between 1799-1827. The Royal accounts list the purchase of a number of Petitot's enamels portraying Anne of Austria in 1807 and 1808 and these dates correlate with the approximate date of the present frame.

Anne of Austria was the daughter of Philip III of Spain (1578-1621) and Margaret of Austria (1584-1611). She married Louis XIII of France (1601-1643) in 1615 and acted as Regent for their son, Louis XIV, during his minority (1643–1651). Contemporary court accounts highlight the difficult relationship that Anne shared with her husband, her controversial relationship with Cardinal Mazarin (1602-1661) and in later years, her disapproving view of her son's infidelities. In 1686, Anne retired to the convent of Val-de-Grâce, where she died of breast cancer five years later.
