Watercolour on ivory, signed on the obverse P.P., gold frame with border of blue enamel set with diamonds to the obverse, handwritten labels within Col. W. Chester Master./ Knole Park/ Cirencester./ by Cosway. and Joined Scots F Guards/ 1801 aged 16.

Footnotes

  • William Chester Master was the son of Major Richard Master (1746-1800) and Isabella Egerton. His father, an MP for Cirencester (1785-1792) and Governor of Tobago (1799-1800), led a distinguished parliamentary and military career. A portrait miniature of Major Richard Master painted in 1786 by Paillou sold at Dukes on 1 - 2 December 2011 (Lot 411). William joined the Scots Fusilier Guards in 1801 and rose to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He later served as one of the Gentleman Ushers of the Privy Chamber to four successive sovereigns: George III (1738-1820), George IV (1762-1830), William VI (1735-1867) and Queen Victoria (1819-1901). In 1814, William married Isabella Margaret Digby, daughter of Colonel the Hon. Stephen Digby (1742-1800), Vice-Chamberlain to Queen Charlotte (1744-1818) and Master of St. Katherine's Hospital.
