Footnotes

  • Provenance
Acquired directly from the artist by the Dutch collector Jan Aldersma.
Thence by descent to the present owner.

The present lot was one of the first works Tretchikoff painted after arriving in Java in 1942. The gardener depicted was the servant of J.W Hartog a local art teacher. He is also depicted in another Tretchikoff's Jakarta works, Cock Fighter.

The work caught the eye of Jan Aldersma, previously a manager of a Talens factory in Jakarta. Aldersma paid for the picture with art materials he had concealed from the Japanese during the confiscation of his factory. These supplies allowed Tretchikoff to continue painting throughout the war.

We are grateful to Boris Gorelick for his assistance in cataloguing this lot.
