Footnotes

  • Provenance
Sale, Stephan Welz & Co., Decorative & Fine Art, Cape Town, 11 October, 1999, lot 272.
    A private collection.

Still life with hydrangeas and mangoes is characteristic of Stern's ability to conjure the sumptuous and sensuous. The intense colour palette compels the viewer to contemplate the material existence of the objects depicted. The profusion of colour and shapes conveys the vital energy of the natural world, whilst the textured areas of impasto give the fruit a palpable quality.

The composition of Stern's still life paintings owe a great debt to the French artist, Paul Cezanne. Still life with hydrangeas and mangoes abandons classical perspective, building up form through colour. As a result, the pastel pink blooms of the hydrangeas are thrust into the foreground, creating the illusion of depth.
