Footnotes

  • Provenance
Sale, Sotheby Parke Bernet South Africa, 19 April 1977, lot 66.
    A private collection.

"Irma's love of the flowers she cultivated in her garden found direct expression in her large still lifes, all exuberant with a vital painterly energy. In some her flowers are hardly contained by the edge of the frame...In her still lifes, Stern eloquently integrated her exterior and interior worlds." (Smuts, 2007)

Irma Stern's still lifes were among her most favoured works and comprise some of her most sumptuous and desirable images. Still life painting offered her an opportunity to experiment with a wealth of colour schemes, unhindered by the ordinary tones of flesh or landscape.

Irises were a favourite subject of Stern's. Other examples include Irises (in the collection of the Irma Stern Museum) and Still life with irises, 1961 (sold in these rooms, 24 March 2010).
