Footnotes

  • Shortly after arriving in Java, Tretchikoff and his companions were handed over to the Japanese authorities and transported to Serang, the biggest town in the West of Java which was under Japanese military occupation. Verifying his claim as a stateless Russian, Tretchikoff was released on parole towards June 1942, settled in Jakarta and began painting soon after his acquittal. In his new environment, Tretchikoff was confronted with a similar fusion of European and Asian cultures which he had encountered in Singapore. Although he did not usually date his Javanese work, it has been suggested that this artwork was produced in late 1942 or early 1943.

Most of his creative output in Java was produced from 1943 onwards. His Wajang Dancer paintings were exhibited during his first exhibitions in South Africa in 1948-9.
