'The Family on the Road' signed 'G.SEKOTO' (lower right); bears Pretoria Art Museum label with title (verso) oil on board 50 x 60cm (19 11/16 x 23 5/8in).
EXHIBITED Pretoria, Pretoria Art Museum, Collection of The Friends, March - April 1973, no.77
The present lot dates to Sekoto's first years in exile (1947-1950):
"The reason for my stylising at the time came out of fear of the jungles all around! Varieties of styles in the new place made me stubborn not to lose my personality. I therefore thought to take something apart, hence the rounds and ovals - trying to think as far back as possible in my life." (the artist, letter to Barbara Lindop, 14 February 1987)
A similar composition, Women carrying dishes c.1948-50, was exhibited at the Johannesburg Art Gallery retrospective of the artist (1989-1990) and is illustrated in the accompanying catalogue (cat. 74).
The Collection of The Friends exhibition, which included the present lot, consisted of 150 artworks by South African artists in private collections. In celebration of the sixth anniversary of Friends of the Pretoria Art Museum, members of the association displayed various artworks from their private collections.
We are grateful to Gerda Guldemond, curator at the Pretoria Art Museum, for her assistance in cataloguing this lot.
