In an advertisement (P4 C1), Manuel Noah (1753- 1792), broker, located at 91 Race Street, between Second and Third Streets, announces that he buys and sells Continental and State Certificates. Noah was married to Zipporah Phillips (1764- 1792), daughter of the patriot Jonas Phillips, among the wealthiest American Jewish merchants of the day. Legend has it that George Washington was among their wedding guests. The couple were the parents of Mordecai Manuel Noah (1785- 1851). After the senior Noah died when Mordecai was only seven years old, the boy went to live with grandfather Jonas.
