square, the black silk ground profusely embroidered with silver and gilt threads, with a large central roundel filled with inscription, within a band of further inscription, a smaller roundel in each corner, with radiating rays filling the ground

  • Inscriptions:
    In the centre, muhammad rasul all salla allah 'alayhi wa sallam Muhammad, God's blessing be upon him and grant him salvation;

    In the red band, Qur'an, chapter XLVIII (al-fath) verse 4 and 5;

    At the end of the verse, katabahu al-ghazi mahmud ibn 'abd al-hamid, Mahmud ibn 'Abd al-Hamid, the warrior wrote it (Ottoman Sultan, AH 1223-55/ AD 1808-39);

    In the four green roundels, abu bakr al-siddiq radi allah 'anhu Abu Bakr, the Faithful, may God be pleased with him; 'umar al-faruq radi allah 'anhu 'Umar, the one who distinguishes truth from falsehood, may God be pleased with him; 'uthman radi allah 'anhu 'Uthman, may God be pleased with him; and 'ali radi allah 'anhu 'Ali, may God be pleased with him.
