    Cosway's miniature of Lady Mary's brother, George Osborne, 6th Duke of Leeds appeared in the same auction at Sotheby's on 3 July 1961 (lot 83). An earlier portrait miniature of Lady Mary, circa 1790, by Mrs Anne Mee sold at Christie's, London, on 28 May 2002 (lot 135).

    Lady Mary was the only daughter and third child of Francis Osborne, 5th Duke of Leeds KG, PC (1751-1799) by his first wife, Lady Amelia Darcy (1754-1784). In 1801, Lady Mary married the Whig politician, Thomas Pelham, 2nd Earl of Chichester PC, PC (Ire), FRS (1756-1826). The couple had three sons and three daughters: Henry Thomas, 3rd Earl of Chichester (1804-1886), Lady Amelia Rose (1806-1884), the Hon. Frederick Thomas (1808-1861), the Hon. John Thomas (1811-1894), Lady Catherine Georgiana (1814-1885) and Lady Lucy Anne (1815-1901). Their second son, Frederick, became a Rear-Admiral in the Royal Navy and their third son, John, became Bishop of Norwich. Their eldest daughter, Amelia married Major General Sir Joshua Jebb, the Surveyor General of Prisons and designer of Pentonville Prison on 5 September 1854.
