Constant Troyon was the one Barbizon painter whose work is associated primarily on the depiction of animals. However, it was not on until later in his career did he become an animalier painter. His output concentrated on livestock and their surrounds, but in 1854 he began to visit his friend Leon-Felix Loysel who maintained kennels in the Touraine, a region along the Loire noted for being hunt country. For the next ten years, he would make annual trips to paint the hounds and pointers there. A number of these canvases, of various sizes, appear in the Vente Troyon at Drouout Jan 22-Feb 1, 1866. Dog paintings by Troyon can be found in the collections of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and the Philadelphia Museum Art.
