3 volumes plus atlas. 4to (291 x 216 mm) and folio (647 x 483 mm). [2], [xii], 491; [6], 516; [6], 562; [4] pp. Half-titles. 17 copper-engraved plates and 1 chart in text volumes, 10 large double-page maps and 6 views in atlas, plus a supplemental double-page map, Carte Réduite du Grand Océan, in atlas. Full calf, spines elaborately gilt, morocco spine labels, gilt borders and turn-ins on covers, a.e.g; atlas volume in recent quarter morocco, slipcase. Dampstaining to lower margin of vols 1 & 3 partially touching engravings in 3 plates of vol 1 and 5 plates in vol 3, recent gift inscription at foot of title vol 1, joints a little tender, minor marginal repairs to atlas sheets, tiny repair to gutter of one map in atlas, two of the double-page maps stamped "service des vaisseaux de l'empereur."

FIRST EDITION IN FRENCH, with fine examples of the double-page atlas maps. The French edition features a "Notice des planches" (appearing in the first text volume as well as in the atlas) bearing descriptive text of the maps, charts and views, that does not appear in the English first edition. "Copies of the French edition are printed in a more attractive manner and on better paper than the English edition" (Forbes 324). Sabin 98441.
