1962 Cisitalia Abarth 850 Scorpione Coupe
Chassis no. 110D-1122579
Engine no. ABA 214S
Founded in 1939 by Piero Dusio to manufacture sports equipment, Consorzio Industriale Sportiva Italia (Cisitalia) amassed a fortune making military uniforms during WW2. A motor racing enthusiast, Dusio used his fortune to become involved with the sport he loved, building the first Cisitalia competition car – a spaceframe monoposto - in 1946.

There being little else available at the time, the Cisitalia sold well and Dusio followed up this successful single-seater by building a two-seater sports car. In 1948 Cisitalia introduced the Pinin Farina-styled and hugely influential 202 Gran Sport coupé which, with its elegant lines and integrated all-enveloping coachwork, set the pattern for every Gran Turismo that followed. It was at this point that Dusio's Grand Prix ambitions all but bankrupted Cisitalia, forcing him to relocate to Argentina. Cisitalia survived under new owners, continuing with the 202 before turning its attention towards custom-bodied FIATs.

Looking very much like the limited edition, FIAT 600-based Allemano-bodied model produced by Abarth, a company that Cisitalia collaborated with, the car offered here is one such. The most obvious difference is the nose, which is smoothly rounded on the Abarth but flat on the Cisitalia. The car carries both Cisitalia and Abarth external badging as well as 'elaborazione Cisitalia' script on the dashboard. This extremely rare model spent many years in the collection belonging to Fratelli Moretarotti, a prominent FIAT, Lancia and Abarth dealership in Tortona, Italy before being sold to a well-known Italian collector. There are no documents with this car, which has never been registered for the road.
