Large Marine Reptile Skull
A fascinating inhabitant of the Jurassic seas, the ichthyosaur is believed to have filled a similar ecological niche as today's dolphin. The habits of Stenopterygius were similar to those of present day dolphins; it spent most of its life in the open seas hunting fish, cephalopods and other creatures of the time. Stenopterygius was physically similar to the better-known Ichthyosaurus. Of all known reptiles, ichthyosaurs were best adapted to a marine existence.
The present offering exhibits the skull with countless teeth; cervical vertebrae are also seen. This is a large individual for its species. Measures 23 1/2 x 2 1/4 x 11in
