An important pair of Copeland presentation vases and covers by Charles Ferdinand Hürten, circa 1868
Probably made for the marriage of Richard Pirie Copeland, the baluster jars and covers painted all around with flowering wisteria hanging above geraniums with variegated leaves, both signed C.F.Hürten, the necks gilded beneath the covers, 40cm high (4)

    On 9 December 1868 Richard Pirie Copeland (1841-1913) married Emily Henrietta Wood (1847-1935), the daughter of Edmund Thomas Wedgwood Wood and great-great-granddaughter of Ralph Wood. In the same year his father William Taylor Copeland died, having retired the previous year, leaving Richard Pirie and his three brothers to continue the business. Richard Pirie became Mayor of Stoke-on-Trent between 1875-1877 and the High Sheriff of the county of Stafford in 1902. A portrait of Richard Pirie, painted by Lucien Besche, the Son-in-law of Charles Hürten, is included in this sale. On Richard Pirie's death in 1913, the china business passed to his two sons, Ronald and Gresham Copeland
