On 9 December 1868 Richard Pirie Copeland (1841-1913) married Emily Henrietta Wood (1847-1935), the daughter of Edmund Thomas Wedgwood Wood and great-great-granddaughter of Ralph Wood. In the same year his father William Taylor Copeland died, having retired the previous year, leaving Richard Pirie and his three brothers to continue the business. Richard Pirie became Mayor of Stoke-on-Trent between 1875-1877 and the High Sheriff of the county of Stafford in 1902. A portrait of Richard Pirie, painted by Lucien Besche, the Son-in-law of Charles Hürten, is included in this sale. On Richard Pirie's death in 1913, the china business passed to his two sons, Ronald and Gresham Copeland
