The extensive Spode service, circa 1826
Presented by Josiah Spode to William Taylor Copeland on his marriage, in Worcester style, with pierced borders in the form of interlocking rings, the exterior coloured with a pale yellow ground applied with flowerheads coloured in pink, the interior painted with sprays of flowers within gilt scroll borders, reserved on a scale blue ground, comprising two tureens, covers and stands, twenty plates, a centrepiece, eight large basket shaped dishes, and four smaller basket shaped dishes marked SPODE (39)


  • Provenance: William Taylor Copeland, on his marriage to Sarah Yates on 29th April 1826. The service was given as a wedding present to Mrs Copeland by Josiah Spode II. The set was subsequently given to Richard Pirie Copeland by William Fowler Mountford Copeland in 1903. Exhibited: Spode Bicentenary Exhibition 1970, no.239.
