Footnotes

  • A sideboard table supplied circa 1776 by Thomas Chippendale for Ninian Home at Paxton House, Berwickshire including a fluted frieze, swag-hung paterae and paired tapering square supports, is illustrated in C. Gilbert, The Life and Works of Thomas Chippendale, 1978, p. 193, pl. 351.

Elements of the design exhibited on the present table such as the concave sides, above paired tapering supports also relate to a pattern popularised by Messrs A. Hepplewhite & Co.'s, Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Guide, 1788 (pl.34). Furthermore the neo-classical fluted frieze features a laurel-festooned patera tablet which corresponds to that featured in Hepplewhite's pattern ibid. for a sideboard-pedestal (pls.35 and 36).

Comparable tables sold Christie's London, 'Michael Lipitch II', 4 October 2001, lot 40, in the same rooms 'Dealing in Excellence: A Celebration of Hotspur and Jeremy', 20 November 2008, lot 87 and 22 Jan 2009, lot 31. A related tablet is shown on a sideboard-table illustrated in H. Cescinsky, English Furniture of the 18th Century, vol. III, 1911, fig. 11
