Footnotes

  • William Taylor Copeland (1797 - 1868) succeeded his father as business partner to Josiah Spode II and became the principal partner of the London business, trading as Spode & Copeland. In 1833 Copeland acquired Spode's manufactory in Stoke-upon-Trent in partnership with Thomas Garrett. When Garrett retired in 1847, Copeland became sole owner of the business, traded under his own name and then in 1867, following the inclusion of his sons as partners in the business, W.T. Copeland & Sons was introduced.

Alongside his business roles, Copeland took an active part in politics at both a national and local level. Alderman Copeland, as he was popularly known, was elected as Member of Parliament for the Coleraine seat in Ireland as a Liberal in 1831 and 1833 before joining the Conservative party and sitting as MP for Stoke-on-Trent 1837 - 1852 and then 1857 - 1865. In London, he was elected Lord Mayor in 1835, and it is in his ceremonial chain and robes that he is depicted in this portrait.
