An impressive Chamberlain ice pail, cover and liner, circa 1800-1810
Lavishly decorated in the 'Dragon in Compartments' pattern, with two mermaid handles and supported on three golden dolphins, the body with a full armorial with a falcon crest and motto 'NON EXTINGUENTUR', the cover with a pierced gallery and dolphin finial, height to rim 32.5cm

  • Eight plates from this service were sold at Christies New York, 30 October 1993, lot 224. This service may have been commissioned for the Webber-Incledon family. In Fairbairn's Crests an entry under this family name for Laurence Charles, Esq of the Dene, Dunster, Somerset, with corresponding crest and motto. Another ice pail of this rare form was sold in these rooms 10 June 2003, lot 220. See also Geoffrey Godden, Chamberlain-Worcester Porcelain (1982), p.246, pl.94. Godden notes that the prices for ice pails ranged from £2.12s.6. for a common plain shape, to twenty guineas for a dolphin supported model.
