The agate surface created from a marbled effect formed using a variety of brown and cream coloured clay, the creamware husk-moulded handles with applied Bacchus head terminals heightened with oil gilding, supported on a square black basalt plinth, 25cm high, the plinth with impressed circular mark Wedgwood and Bentley Etruria (2)

  • Provenance: The Mr. & Mrs. Samuel Victor collection, sold at Sotheby's New York on 10th March 1978, lot 108. A pair of Wedgwood and Bentley vases of this type in the British Museum is illustrated by Aileen Dawson, Masterpieces of Wedgwood (1984), pl.2b. A further example from the Glaisher collection is in the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge. This vase is classed as Shape no.1 in the Wedgwood Shape Book. It is based on an etching by Marie-Therèse Reboul Vien (1729-1805), plate 13 in Suite de Vases composée dans le Goût de l'Antique, Paris, 1760, after designs by her husband, the painter Joseph Marie Vien (1716-1809).
