Footnotes

  • These two busts are related to an unlikely group of four busts depicting the French philosopher Denis Diderot, Minerva, Endymion and Ariadne. They were probably the items described in Wedgwood's 1787 Ornamental Ware catalogue as 'small busts with emblematic terms'. In this catalogue ninety busts of eighty-two subjects are listed. A series of four are in the British museum collection, illustrated by Aileen Dawson, Masterpieces of Wedgwood (1984) p.58, pl.45. A further set, upon tapering blue jasper plinths are in the Royal Collection at Windsor castle and are illustrated by Robin Reilly, Wedgwood (1995) p.83.
