Footnotes

  • This important panel, also known as the 'Death of Meleager' is taken from a sarcophagus in the Albani Collection and now in the Capitoline Museum in Rome. Wedgwood's version first appeared in the factory catalogue in 1773 and while the subject remained in production throughout the 19th century, these plaques were rarely attempted because of inevitable firing difficulties.
