Intaglio Gem Black Opal Inlay "The Kangaroo"
Lightning Ridge, New South Wales, Australia
This is a relatively contemporary rendition of a traditional opal craft. Historically, the wives of the miners would make such artwork, embedding precious stone into the design lines of etched glass, a time-consuming concept that for one piece of artwork can take up to six months.
The present piece, depicting a kangaroo, is an extraordinary artwork suitable for use as a wall hanging or cabinet display. Consisting of 60 million year-old gem black opal, carved into sections and embedded into 4mm thick black glass. There are several hundred pieces with significant carat weight that have been carefully selected and cut for their outstanding quality of brilliance, luster, depth and beauty. Offered in a wooden frame measuring 14 1/2 x 11 1/2 inches overall.
