Andean Opal Carving of a Falcon
Andes Mountains Peru
Most likely made by a South American carver in the early 1990s, this very large specimen of bright blue Peruvian opal has been carved into the form of a falcon utilizing the natural brown veining in the opal to suggest variations of color in the bird's feathers. The beak is carved of jasper and the eyes are set with faceted garnets. The feet are made of gold vermeil; they rest upon a removable base of dog tooth calcite above a slab of basalt. Height 12in
