Footnotes

  • Gillows supplied a rosewood table of this model, but of slightly larger dimensions, to Ferguson and Co. on June 6th 1822 (see Estimate Sketch Book, p. 3163). A previous design in the Sketch Book (p. 3152) shows a variant of the above table with a separate design for alternate end-supports like those used on the table offered here. Gillows produced several variants of the table with solid tops and leather inset tops. Susan Stuart's Gillows of Lancaster and London, 1730 - 1849 (2008), Vol. I, p. 292 illustrates a larger library table with end pillars very similar to those on the table offered here. Other examples include two offered at Bonhams London, Fine English Furniture, 26 November 2008, Lots 179 and 186.
