A Satsuma ovoid vase

Painted in enamels and gilt, the body with large shaped panels, one enclosing a group of warriors preparing for battle, in the background showing more warriors on the shores of the Koromo river, the other side depicting nine rakan accompanied by karako gathered in a winter landscape, including Dakaharita Sonja unfurling a scroll, Handaka Sonja with an alms bowl and Shubaka Sonja holding a nyoi sceptre, the neck and foot with a band of lappets, the base signed Kinkozan, with wood storage box. 40.1cm (15¾in) high.
