A late 17th/early 18th century oak boarded box, Gower Peninsula, Glamorgan, Wales
The rectangular top above a front frieze carved with a pair of radiating flowerheads, the initials 'MC' carved beneath the escutcheon, 73cm wide x 43cm deep x 28cm high, (28.5" wide x 16.5" deep x 11" high)

Bebb, Welsh Furniture: 1250 - 1950 (2007), Vol. II, p. 73, Fig. 767, illustrates a box with drawer, attributed to Gower, Glamorgan, with comparable carving, and notes that 'the distinctive Gower boxes...seem to represent the work of one man using a basic design which was always rendered slightly differently' (ibid., Vol. I, p. 26). Carving from the Gower peninsula is distinguished by its unusually shallow nature, and the radiating floral motif.
