A mid-17th century oak panel back armchair
Of unusual design, circa 1640-60
The back panel inset with a marquetry flower-filled urn, (marquetry inlay no vacant), beneath an arch carved with leaf-and-berry spandrels, headed by a guilloche carved top-rail with integral conforming leaf-and-berry carved cresting, the downswept open arms carved to the scroll-end sides with a single flowerhead and raised on inverted baluster-turned uprights, the boarded seat on channel-moulded and punch decorated rails, conforming turned front legs, lacking stretchers, 56.5cm wide x 60cm deep x 99.5cm high, (22" wide x 23.5" deep x 39" high)

- Of particular interest here is the arcading applied to the back panel. In the first instance it may appear unusual how it overlaps the marquetry cut-outs and has no column/plinth supports, however, it would appear that the design was originally conceived in this way. The flowerheads carved to each side of the arm ends are a particularly rare feature.
