All numbered 1698, all with various Exchequer and Board of Trade verification marks, the earliest for 1881, to weigh 56lb - 1lb, the 56lb weight 30cm high, together with a boxed group of nine flat weights, the 8oz., 4oz., 2oz., 1oz. and 8dr. examples all numbered 1698, the 8oz. example also marked 'CITY OF DURHAM', the earliest verification mark for 1909, the 1/4oz., 2dr., 1dr. and 1/2dr. later and associated, the flat weights in a stained beech box, (17 including box)

  • In Marks and Marking of Weights and Measures of the British Isles, Carl Ricketts notes that 'there is no record...of any standards being issued or re-verified for the City [of Durham] before [1881]', when inspection was transferred to the City from the County of Durham [p. 152]. Ricketts also notes that a set of standards under Indenture Number 1698 was issued to the County of Durham in 1881 [ibid.]
